Is it possible to stain leather
Some folks like to finish with nothing but a leather conditioner or oil to help soften the leather again. Some like to apply conditioner and then apply a finish of their choosing and others will just jump straight to leather sealers. There are several options out there, so try out which process works best for you on some scrap! We recommend Resolene to finish your project, but we also carry Bag Kote!
Be sure to apply it evenly, working out any bubbles or streaks that may occur. Some leathers like those in auto interiors have a pigmented finish that better retains color and resists stains. However, even pigmented finishes will wear and discolor with use. A dye or a finish can be used to restore leather. Dyes cannot be used to lighten a color for example to cover darker stains. Leather paints and finishes are therefore more versatile. You can change color even to a lighter shade , and you can mimic the varied, marbled appearance of aniline leather.
Use of our products on nubuck or aniline will slightly cool the feel of the leather by adding a water-resistant finish. The leather will continue to breathe.
While it may still exhibit absorbent qualities, it will be more stain and fade-resistant than traditional leather dyes. I have a new black leather bag with contrasting tan handles. Color changing ice skates is discouraged. An alcohol based prepping agent is the best. Just plain Isopropyl Alcohol works better than any of the fore mentioned prep agents, but still, is not as effective as the job requires.
DeNatured Alcohol works well, but is a bit too harsh for this purpose. A combination of the two can be sufficient but there are still reactions that need to be performed that this combination alone will not do.

Allow the Leather Prep to completely dry before proceeding. A hair dryer comes in very handy from this point on! The new color finish is now ready to be applied.
But before we get in to that, lets discuss leather finishes: There are a whole lot of choices out there, which one should you choose? But, which type of water based product? You will find three different types of water based colorants: Latex, acrylic and polyurethane. Latex: The cheapest of all of them.

Still, they do not wear well and the adhesion leaves a lot to be desired. Cracking and peeling are big problems with this material. Acrylics: More expensive that Latex. You probably know acrylics from craft projects you have done or seen done. They work well in these situations. But not for leather. Acrylic leather colorants do have similar modifications as Latex for flexibility and adhesion, and they do work much better than Latex, but they still lack the long term quality and durability that we are looking for in leather finishes.
Polyurethane: These are what are produced by Leather Magic! The most expensive, but the best! Polyurethane is an extremely versatile product.
It can be formulated for a great many different applications. Polyurethanes are not just a single product modified for certain applications, rather, they are formulated for specific applications. Why not put the same material on as a finish that the leather was originally finished with? You will require a specific color which you will choose.
In any event, you must now apply that color to your leather. Keep in mind this can be a somewhat messy project, so clear the area so as to avoid any accidents. Let the color dry for 1 hour and then apply additional coats. You don't need to dampen the leather with water again after doing the first coat. Apply as many coats as you need to get the color you are looking for. Most leather couches will need between 3 and 6 coats total. Let each coat dry completely before applying another.
If you apply too much dye, it will look metallic or too shiny. To remove excess dye, soak a rag in rubbing alcohol and run it over the affected area. Keep in mind that no matter how careful you are, hand dying leather will result in a slightly uneven look.
If the dye is significantly darker in one spot, use rubbing alcohol to take off some of the excess dye. Apply a finisher to the leather once the last coat of dye is dry. Finisher will seal in the dye and protect it from fading. Give your couch at least 1 hour to dry completely after applying the final coat of dye. Spray the finisher on the leather couch and rub it in with a damp, clean rag. Use long strokes to evenly coat the surface of the leather with finisher.
